Botanic Gardens
Wellington's Botanic Gardens, established in 1868, are well worth a half day or even a full day visit.

Covering 26 hectares the Gardens may be accessed from the top of the Cable Car or Tinakori Road.

Otari Native Plant Museum
The Otari Native Plant Museum is New Zealand's premier native plant and forest botanic garden.Set in 75 hectares of mature and regenerating native forest features include:
  • podocarp-northern rata trees
  • several 400 year old rimu trees
  • alpine garden
  • aerial walkway giving a unique view of the forest canopy
  • picnic areas

Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
The Karori Wildlife Sanctuary combines rare native wildlife, regenerating native bush lakes and historic gold mining sites.

Special tours may be arranged with plenty of prior notice.

From 4 June 2001 the sanctuary will be open to the public all day on Sundays and public holidays.
